Endangered orca whale washes up dead on Washington beach
A killer whale that washed up on a Washington State beach has been identified as an endangered Puget Sound orca, born in 2009.
The female whale was found on Long Beach. Biologists say it was part of the "L pod", one of three tracked pods of southern resident killer whales that are known to frequent Puget Sound.
The whale was found to have significant trauma on the head, chest and side.
The cause of the trauma is under investigation, but officials say it doesn't appear to be a typical ship strike.
